Any tips for a beginner guitarist?

I just bought my first acoustic guitar and I am a beginner... Any pointers? I want to get good, but I don't really know if I want to spend a bunch of cash on lessons. I heard you could just watch youtube videos but then I got really confused....yeah. So anyways, any advice?Any tips for a beginner guitarist?
i am a self taught guitarist myself, though i am no eddie van halen, im not too bad. i learned by reading tablature books and chord books. also, i played all the time and then failed out of college! dont do that.Any tips for a beginner guitarist?
Definitely Learn how to run easy chord sequences, even if you want to play lead. Once You learn simple chords, learn some picking simple picking patterns for the chords instead of strumming. After that you should be pretty set to play some lead, slowly and then build it up. There are loads of websites for techniques, and the best guitar forum out there is probably on www.ultimate-guitar.com, which has a forum full of guitar players talking about technique, id say visit that.

ohhh and, i would advise you to leanr the chords C,D,G,Em, because there are thousand upon millions of songs that use those chords only. you can find a full chord chart of every single chord on ultimate-guitar aswell, but incase it helps, heres how the chords are set in standard tuning

Standard Tuning

-------E A D G B e %26lt; String

G-----3 2 0 0 0 3 %26lt;Frett Number

Em---0 2 2 0 0 0

D-----X 0 0 2 3 2

C-----0 3 2 0 1 0

The amount of people i know that play great lead guitar that couldn't string a chord sequence together is unbelievable, always go for rhythm guitar first :)

If i were you, i would use either ultimate-guitar or 911tabs.com to find song chords and tablature.

Hope this helps
YOU DO NOT NEED A TEACHER!!!

They are useful, but you don't need them. I started playing the guitar about a year and a half ago, had three lessons, and realized it wasn't worth the expense. So i taught myself; watched YouTube videos, read sites on theory, and taught myself to play any tabs i looked at. Now, i'm at a point where it would only take me 10 or 15 minutes (may sometimes need a tab) to learn and play the vast majority of songs i hear. The people i have played to have said that they honestly cannot tell a noticeable difference between my diligently revised songs and the originals, (aside from other instruments in the originals).

As long as you practice and observe what works and what doesn't, you will get a sense and fell for the right techniques in how you tackle your playing. Just research, play and learn. If you stick to it and really dive in head-first you will get good, whether it's sooner or later.

If you ever need to actively ask questions, just google, youtube, or yahoo answers it.
Im a beginner too :)

Buy yourself some books first and intitally teach yourself, like the strings, some scales, and some chords and stuff. Then get yourself a teacher. I did the opposite. I got my teacher to teach me all that stuff and it's pointless when you can teach yourself!!

Youtube videos can help! Just type in the song you want like

Guns and roses welcome to the jungle chords and see what it comes up with.

Also use google. Type in a song you want to learn and see what that comes up with.

Download tabs off the internet and just dont stop practising. The only way you'll learn is if you keep practising!

Best of luck :)

ps. for tabs go to ultimateguitar.com!
TEN TIPS TO BETTER GUITAR PLAYING

1. Practice slow and maintain control

2. Keep hands and strings clean

3. Learn chords first, runs second, leading third

4. Learn to read music in the treble clef

5. Research basic music theory

6. Maintain a clean instrument

7. Change strings often

8. Observe other guitarists-- styles and delivery

9. Develop your own style

10. Remain open to suggestions on better playing
Learn your chords, at least the basic ones. That will open up a lot of other opportunities for you. Also, perform as much as possible, even as a beginner and even if it's just for family and/or friends. It really makes the music come alive.
Since you can't learn every scale %26amp; every chord in a guitar ..........cheat your way out by just practicing the most frequently used scales %26amp; common chords.......

Practice whenever you feel like it.........if you force yourself then you won't practice well..............though try practicing everyday.
Always use this rythem when playing chords

I was thought that as a beginner
See if your local educational system offers classed ie. adult school, community college, Public school curriculum if your still in the system.
Practise blowing it very hard.
see if you can re-create a tune you already know
